Duckology with Dr. Frank – Midsummer Molting
The summer wing molt is a very unusual time for ducks. They gather up – dabblers and divers alike – migrate to a marsh with stable water and feed, and lose all their flight feathers. For a week, they can’t fly. Then they regrow their primary feathers and begin the long process of filling in the next season’s stunning breeding plumage.
