Manitoba Crew Bands Geese for Retention Study

Manitoba Conservation’s game bird manager Frank Baldwin and his banding crew recently wrapped up their seventh year of banding Canada geese in and around Winnipeg.

Baldwin is banding the geese with regular stainless steel and aluminum bands, along with a riveted one for a band retention study.

On this day, the flightless geese were corralled into nets by Conservation staff and volunteers in kayaks and walking beside the wetlands. Once in the nets, staff recorded the sex of each individual, adult female breeding status, and if they are a recapture, the previous band information is noted.

At this site, many of the geese had been previously banded.
