Delta’s international headquarters is located in Bismarck, North Dakota. Currently, our dedicated team consists of almost 100 employees, of which about half work within our headquarters office and the other half work remotely throughout the US and Canada. Our organization has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years, and this is expected to continue. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Magazine Editor/Communications Writer manages all facets of Delta’s membership magazine, ensuring each issue reflects the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. This position leads the editorial process from concept to publication, curating compelling, high-value content that connects readers with Delta’s programs, people, and conservation impact. In addition to managing the magazine, the editor develops engaging written content for Delta’s various platforms to strengthen brand voice and member engagement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Oversee every aspect of the magazine’s editorial and production process.
2. Lead the annual content planning cycle, ensuring Delta’s strategic priorities and initiatives are emphasized across all five annual issues.
3. Plan, assign, and manage work from freelance writers, photographers, and other contributors.
4. Serve as lead editor for all magazine content, maintaining high standards of accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
5. Collaborate closely with the Art Director to develop visually engaging layouts, incorporating photos, graphics, charts, and other visual elements that enhance storytelling and reader experience.
6. Write and develop high-quality stories that support Delta’s mission, programs, and conservation pillars for use in the magazine and across digital platforms.
7. Drive the production process, managing timelines, workflow, and deadlines to ensure the on-time delivery of each issue.
8. Oversee administrative and managerial functions related to the magazine, including contributor payments, contracts, and responding to submissions and reader inquiries.
9. Write and edit press releases, especially related to Delta’s programs, policy efforts, and organizational milestones.
10. Contribute to special reports and publications, including Delta’s Annual Report, pillar reports, and research updates.
11. Represent Delta at trade shows, conferences, expos, and partner events, serving as a brand ambassador for the organization.
12. Monitor and stay informed on waterfowl and conservation-related news and trends, both internally and across the broader community.
13. Serve as producer of the “Voice of the Duck Hunter” podcast. Specifically:
• Conference with podcast host (Joel Brice) at least once per month to brainstorm guests, locations, and formats for the podcast.
• Frequently conduct outreach via all departments and resources in Delta as well as outside sources for podcast ideas to bring to the table in meetings with the podcast host.
• As the outcome of those monthly (or more frequent) meetings outline and coordinate logistics for a minimum of 26 podcast episodes each year.
• Work ahead to develop a stockpile of at least 3-5 timeless “emergency” episodes that are available for use at any time should production of a scheduled episode fall through.
• Keep the stockpile refreshed to a minimum of three episodes as they are used.
• On occasion, contribute to podcast episodes as a co-host/”sidekick”, but only as needed and as pre-planned with the host.
• The related title is to be “podcast producer” (not “co-host”).
• Annual evaluation of performance of these duties will be conducted in consultation with podcast host.
14. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field and at least three years of professional experience required.
2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
3. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

5. Superior ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for corporate and external publications.
6. Ability to offer sound media relations advice to senior leadership.
7. Excellent managerial and organizational abilities.

9. Ability to work with corporate management, employees, media, and the larger community.
10. Ability to coordinate efforts of various teams in order to present a coherent message.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and listen. The position requires dexterity in using telephone, computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and other office equipment. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and navigate stairs. The employee must lift and move up to 40 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an office environment well as in the field (e.g., marsh, water, woods, etc.).
